(I finally did something for today. Yay! Even though the picture’s not very good.)
For Obscure Fandom Week 2011 I drew a picture of Ardwin from Birdwing by Rafe Martin.
If you’ve ever heard the fairy tale of The Six Swans, you know it’s about six princes who were turned into swans. Their sister suffered for six years to make six shirts out of stalwort and nettles to break their curse. But, when the time came, the sixth shirt was unfinished and the youngest brother was left with one swan wing. Ardwin is that sixth brother.
Really, though, I love this book. Ardwin struggles a lot with accepting himself and his wing, and deals with prejudice and evil schemes. And it really feels like a fairy tale. A lot of fairy tale adaptions and continuations are great, but they just don’t have that fairy tale feel. But this book does!
(And also I’d really love it if I knew one other person in the world who read this book.)
